How does the Reward Prediction Error (RPE) support neurofeedback training in IFEN Infinity Games?

  • IFEN Infinity Games is a neurofeedback game collection that utilizes the Reward Prediction Error (RPE) by linking real-time brain state criteria with immediate, meaningful game outcomes. Each mini-game reacts instantly to the criteria status, enabling movement and reward gains (points, coins, stars, progress) when the criteria are met, and reducing progress when they are not. This creates a consistent reinforcement learning loop that supports self-regulation through repeated feedback updates. With diverse modes such as Donut Crush, Cube Stack, Pirates, and Space Journey, the reinforcement signals remain varied and less predictable, while leaderboards record duration, total score, and date for session-spanning progress tracking. Trainers can customize the challenge by adjusting parameters such as speed, track length, number of laps, rotation speed, or color-change intervals to fine-tune goals and maintain a reward structure that can be learned over time.

Neurofeedback is understood as a self-regulation process based on reinforcement learning, in which this is acquired through contingent feedback.

Motivation, salience of the reinforcer, and sustained engagement are considered important moderators of learning success. Since the subjective motivational value of feedback can vary between individuals and decrease with repeated exposure, the adaptive design of feedback environments is discussed as an approach to maintain effective reinforcement.

Against this background, offering multiple feedback or game options can be understood as a theoretically sound strategy to support engagement, reduce habituation effects, and maintain the reinforcing value of feedback across training sessions, thereby potentially promoting learning stability and the transfer of effects (Schwartz & Andrasik, 2016; Enriquez-Geppert et al., 2017; Lubianiker et al., 2022; Sitaram et al., 2024).

Animal Run

is, for example, a playful neurofeedback game for children that uses friendly animal characters and a colorful, animated environment. The design supports a positive user experience and can help maintain motivation during sessions.
In the game, the movement of the animals to the finish line is influenced by the measured brain activity. The visual progress serves as immediate feedback and makes the training process intuitive and comprehensible.
The game offers extensive customization options, allowing speed and difficulty to be adjusted individually. This makes Animal Run suitable for use in professional neurofeedback settings and supports the promotion of attention and self-regulation processes in a playful environment.
